Cocktail Safety Checklist
Before You Even Go Out
- Eat something before you drink. An empty stomach and alcohol are not a great combo.
- Charge your phone and let at least one friend know where you’ll be and who you’re with.
- Pack smart — bring just what you need, including cash, ID, and a backup plan to get home on your own.
- If you’re heading out solo or meeting a new group, set up a friend check-in ahead of time.
While You’re at the Bar
- Always watch your drink being made. If you can't see it from start to finish, don’t drink it.
- Don’t accept drinks from strangers unless the bartender hands it to you directly.
- Keep your drink in your hand or in your direct line of sight — never leave it on a table, bar, or ledge.
- If you have to step away (bathroom, dance floor, etc.), finish your drink first or toss it. It’s not worth the risk.
- Don’t drink from communal containers like punch bowls or shared pitchers unless you saw them being made fresh.
If Something Feels Off
- If your drink tastes weird, looks cloudy, or the ice melts faster than usual — stop drinking it.
- If you suddenly feel disoriented, overly drowsy, dizzy, or confused after just one drink, get help right away.
- Head to the bar staff or security and ask for help discreetly. Use phrases like “I need an angel shot” — many bars know what that means.
- Don’t go outside alone if you’re feeling off. Stay where it’s public and bright until help arrives or a trusted friend shows up.
Heading Home
- Leave when you say you will — don’t get talked into “just one more” if you’re already at your limit.
- Don’t let anyone walk you to your car or Uber unless it’s a trusted friend.
- Trust your gut. If someone gives you a weird vibe or is too persistent, don’t be afraid to walk away, speak up, or ask for help.
- Message your check-in person when you get home so they know you’re safe.
